Martinez starts Wednesday
PHILADELPHIA — Pedro Martinez will make his return to the majors Wednesday when he starts for Philadelphia against the Chicago Cubs.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said Monday that the three-time Cy Young winner will come off the 15-day disabled list. He finished up last season with the New York Mets.
To make room for Martinez in the rotation, the NL East-leading Phillies are sending 46-year-old left-hander Jamie Moyer to the bullpen. Moyer’s 5.47 ERA is third-worst in the majors.
Clemens authors sued
HOUSTON — A former gym owner has sued the authors of a book that details the alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs by pitcher Roger Clemens.
Kelly Blair claimed in a defamation lawsuit filed Monday in Harris County that the authors falsely accused him of being a steroids dealer in an underground network. Blair also claimed his gym, 1-on-1 Elite Personal Fitness, was falsely labeled a front for illegal drug sales in the book, “American Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America’s Pastime.”
Zimmermann needs surgery
WASHINGTON — Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo says rookie right-hander Jordan Zimmermann probably needs reconstructive elbow surgery.
Rizzo said Monday that Dr. James Andrews reviewed an MRI exam done on Zimmermann’s right elbow and agreed with a Nationals team doctor that the pitcher should have an operation to repair a ligament.

SAN FRANCISCO — All-Star pitcher Chad Billingsley will miss his scheduled start against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday with a strained left hamstring. Billingsley left his last start against Atlanta on Friday after straining his hamstring on a single. On Monday, the Dodgers decided to skip his next start.
