Now that the Syracuse win is in the rearview mirror, the Huskies are preparing for what should be a much tougher test against Boise State.
You may remember the Broncos from their crazy Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma. As Broncos coach Chris Petersen pointed out during today’s teleconference, that game was big for a number of reasons. It elevated them from being just the team that plays on the blue turf, to the team that plays on the blue turf and played in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Broncos have now won 14 games in a row, but have never won a road game against a BCS conference school.
Tyrone Willingham seemed to be in a more charitable mood than he was Friday, upgrading his assessment of Jake Locker’s debut from “so-so” to “very good.”
The depth chart released by the Huskies today looks, for the most part, like it did last week. One notable change is at fullback, where backup Luke Kravitz is not listed because of a hand injury suffered in the Syracuse game. Starter Paul Homer will be backed up by one of two freshmen, either Austin Sylvester or Tobias Togi. Sylvester was recruited as a linebacker, and Willingham said that for now the Huskies plan to use him on both sides of the ball.
Ben Ossai and Cody Habben, who both saw significant playing time against Syracuse, were again listed as either-or as the starting left tackle. Ossai started at left tackle against Syracuse.
Another apparently undecided position is at the middle linebacker position, where the starter is listed as Donald Butler or Trenton Tuiasosopo. Tuiasosopo, a Mariner High grad, impressed coaches with his play in fall camp, and got the starting nod against Syracuse. Butler saw plenty of playing time, but still seems to be less than 100 percent as he recovers from off-season knee surgery.
Byron Davenport, who didn’t make the trip to Syracuse because of a hamstring injury, is listed as a backup at cornerback behind Vonzell McDowell Jr.
