Montes, Suisbel homer as Frogs win

EUGENE, Ore. — Lazaro Montes and Luis Suisbel each hit fifth-inning home runs, and the Everett AquaSox held on for a 6-5 victory over the Eugene Emeralds Tuesday night at PK Park.

Gabriel Sosa pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save as the Frogs improved to 25-26.

Everett scored a run in the second and another in the third for an early 2-0 lead, and starter Nick Payero pitched three scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the fourth.

James Tibbs III greeted with Payero in the frame with an infield single that got a piece of Everett shortstop Colt Emerson’s glove. After a Charlie Szykowny walk and a passed ball by AquaSox catcher Josh Caron, Onil Perez hit a single to right fielder Lazaro Montes. Tibbs scored, but Montes gunned down Szykowny at home.

Scott Bandura drove in Perez with a triple to center to tie the score at 2-2, and Bandura came home for a 3-2 Eugene edge on Zane Zielinski’s sacrifice fly before Payero struck out Cole Foster to prevent further damage.

The AquaSox answered right away in the top of the fifth.

After Michael Arroyo worked a one-out walk, Montes and Suisbel hit back-to-back homers off two different pitchers for a 5-3 Everett lead. It was the 12th long ball of the season for Montes, who leads the Northwest League.

Payero finished his evening with a scoreless fifth. The 24-year-old right-hander picked up his first win of the season (1-4), allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out six batters.

Anthony Donofrio’s RBI double in the top of the sixth for a 6-3 AquaSox lead proved to be necessary.

Shaddon Peavyhouse (1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1K) and Ben Hernandez (2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2K) each allowed a run before Sosa shut down the Emeralds (26-26) in the ninth.
