RENTON — Kamiak High School’s Seo Hee Moon added medalist honors to her already impressive record at the PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur. Moon who finished runner-up in back-to-back years (2006, 2007), was the only player in the field to break par Monday and did it with a round of 2-under 69.
Playing in the first group out this morning, Moon opened the front nine with birdies at the par-4 4th and 8th holes with just one bogey, which came on the long par-3 5th hole. On the back nine Moon again carded two birdies at the par-4 11th and 13th holes to get to 3-under on her round, but then bogeyed her final hole of the day to finish at 2-under par 69 on the challenging 5,448 yard par-71 layout. Moon will enter match play as the No. 1 seed.
Local favorite, Lauren Sewell of Renton, also played very well today, carding a qualifying round of 1-over par 72. Sewell got off to a slow start with her only bogeys of the day coming on holes 3, 4, 5, and 6 but she battled back with three birdies on holes 7, 9, and 18 for the second best round of the day.
In all there were 15 players who scored 77 or better so the cut to make the 16 player Championship Flight came at 7-over par 78 with seven players battling in a sudden death playoff for the final spot. Catherina Li, of Kent, outlasted the competition with 6 straight pars in playoff to get the No. 16 seed in the Championship Flight.
