Moose Jaw 5, Everett 2

TALKING POINTS

If the Everett Silvertips are the type to make new-year’s resolutions, they need only make one: enough with the let-ups.

Every game this season it seems the Tips have a moment where they let off the gas, and it comes back to bite them. Tonight was no exception. Everett was dead even with Moose Jaw, which is leading the East Division, during the first and third periods. But the second period was all Warriors as they outshot the Tips 19-5 and outscored Everett 4-1. And the inconsistency stretches across the board, from offense to defense to goaltending. It’s a team-wide epidemic the Tips need to cure.

I’ll keep this short and just wish everyone a happy new year. In 2011, including playoffs, Everett won just 18 of its 74 games. Maybe 2012 will be a little kinder to the Tips than 2011.

TURNING POINT

Early in the second period Everett’s Jordyn Boyd turned the puck over to Jordan Wyton in the right circle. Wyton had the time to line up a shot and fire into the far corner, opening both the scoring and the floodgates.

HIT OF THE DAY

Late in the second period Everett’s Jesse Mychan steamrolled Cody Beach. However, Mychan may have spent a little too much time admiring his handiwork as he ended up getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty out of it.

THREE STARS

First star: Sam Fioretti, Moose Jaw. Two goals and one assist, I suspect the Tips wish they had listed him when he attended Everett’s training camp in 2008.

Second star: Ryan Harrison, Everett. Two assists, hands down was Everett’s most energetic player, and his line was the only one for Everett that did anything.

Third star: Justin Kirsch, Moose Jaw. Three assists, was constantly dangerous.

The Herald’s honorable mention: Cody Beach, Moose Jaw. One goal and one assist, his game is reminiscent of his older brother Kyle.

Special recognition: Kohl Bauml, Everett. Had one assist and was an effective member of Harrison’s line. But it was his selling out to prevent a goal, throwing his body in front of the net with Kent Simpson out of position, that caught my eye.

BOX SCORE

Moose Jaw 5, Everett 2
