Mount Vernon comes from four runs behind to beat M-P

MARYSVILLE – Some teams would be shell-shocked, ready to pack it in, game over.

But not Mount Vernon.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning of a Western Conference North Division fastpitch softball game Thursday, Mount Vernon scored eight unanswered runs en route to an 8-4 comeback victory.

“After the first inning, we kind of got together and talked,” said Mount Vernon coach Alan Williams, whose team improved to 9-3 in league, 12-3 overall. “We said, ‘Hey, we’ve still got six innings left. Let’s go.’ “

And away they went. During Mount Vernon’s rally, Kylie Jensen drove in two runs with a third-inning double that tied the score at 4-4.

“That kind of gave us a boost and got everybody jacked up,” Williams said.

Overall for Mount Vernon, Kelsey Anderson was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Alicia Johnson had two hits and one RBI for the Bulldogs, who gained sole possession of second place in the division.

Winning pitcher Meagan Gordon (12-3) walked two and gave up four runs on three hits in the first inning, but she recovered and struck out seven in a complete-game effort.

Gordon, who usually is replaced on offense with a designated hitter, also batted 2-for-3 with a single and a triple in just her second hitting opportunity this season.

“She’s been looking good in practice and we’ve been struggling hitting,” Williams said, “so I figured, hey, let’s give her a shot. I think it kind of pumped up the rest of the team, too.”

For Marysville-Pilchuck (8-4, 10-5), Chelsy Iapala had a three-run triple in the first inning. The Tomahawks fell to third place.
