M’s Miley pitches 4 no-hit, shutout innings in rehab start

EVERETT — Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Wade Miley, who hasn’t pitched in a game since June 12th, pitched four scoreless innings for the Everett AquaSox in a rehab start for the Frogs Friday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Miley threw 54 pitches and struck out seven without allowing a hit for the Sox. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 17th with a shoulder impingement after allowing three runs in five innings against the Texas Rangers.

After Friday’s contest, Miley said he was ready to return to the M’s.

“It feels great,” Miley said of his shoulder. “Ready to get back. (It was nice to) face some hitters, get a feel for how it’s going to be. It went well.”

Miley, who wore No. 33 with the Frogs as opposed to his usual No. 20, threw 36 strikes — with 16 balls — and faced 12 batters in his rehab assignment. Everett manager Rob Mummau said before the game that Miley would be on a 50-60 pitch limit.

“He’s on a pitch count and we’ll definitely stick to that,” Mummau said. “That’s the only thing we do: make sure he gets his pitches in and go from there.”

The left-hander, who is 6-3 this season with a 5.28 earned-run average, doesn’t know what the next step will be. But Miley is hoping to rejoin the Mariners sooner, rather than later.

“I’m not exactly sure but I’m going to try to talk them into going right back,” Miley said. “I’m ready to go.”

Miley is the latest Mariners player to make a rehab start in Everett for Mummau. He joins Hishashi Iwakuma, Erasmo Ramirez and Stephen Pryor.

“Anytime you get a big leaguer down at this level it’s really exciting for all the guys,” Mummau said. “I imagine he’s just happy to be back on the mound.”

Indeed, Miley said it was fun to get back in a game.

“It’s baseball. I enjoy playing baseball,” Miley said. “I’m happy to get to pitch again.”
