Winn bids farewell

Randy Winn, a quiet but popular presence in the Mariners’ clubhouse, said good-bye to his teammates Sunday and prepared to join the San Francisco Giants.

The Mariners traded Winn to the Giants on Saturday in exchange for catcher Yorvit Torrealba and minor league pitcher Jesse Foppert.

Winn said he knew Saturday morning that a trade was likely when his name was pulled off the starting lineup.

“I had an idea,” he said. “Now I’ve got to worry about packing up and getting down to San Francisco.”

He will join the Giants on Tuesday and is expected to become the everyday center fielder for a team that hopes to remain in contention for a playoff berth.

“I’m excited to go to a team that’s in the hunt for a wild-card spot and in the thick of the division,” Winn said. “At the same time, it’s hard to leave a team where you’ve got a lot of friends.”

Just win: His roster has been jostled and the Mariners officially are looking beyond this season after the weekend trades, but M’s manager Mike Hargrove said the mission doesn’t change.

“We’re still about winning ballgames,” he said. “We happened to trade away three guys, but (winning is) what our focus is. You have to learn how to win just like you have to learn how to hit a curveball or hit a slider. That needs to be our focus.”

Back on the road: Former Cascade High School star Grady Sizemore ended his four-day stay at home with a 0-for-2 game, but he walked three times and scored twice. Sizemore, the Indians’ starting center fielder and leadoff hitter, went 4-for-14 with a home run, triple, double, five walks and five runs in the four-game series.

Of note: Hargrove said Wiki Gonzalez would get most of the playing time at catcher, but newly acquired Yorvit Torrealba also would see plenty of action. “Right now, Gonzalez is the starter,” Hargrove said. “But as we learn Torrealba, we’ll see where it goes.” … Catcher Miguel Ojeda, obtained from the Padres on Saturday in the Miguel Olivo trade, was in uniform at Safeco Field but optioned to Class AAA Tacoma after the game. … Bucky Jacobsen, who hasn’t played since knee surgery Sept. 16, begins a minor league rehab assignment tonight with the Mariners’ rookie-level team in Peoria, Ariz. …
