Murphy adjusts to turf, reaches 2A semis

EVERETT – It took a while for both teams to adjust to an unfamiliar surface, but Archbishop Murphy adapted quicker and came away with a 2-0 victory over Blaine Saturday in a first-round District 1 girls soccer playoff game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Andrea Gaitan and Brenna Rice scored second-half goals for the Wildcats, who advanced to the semifinals Wednesday at Mount Vernon H.S. The Wildcats will play Nooksack Valley at 7:30 p.m. in a winner-to-state game.

“We had a terrible time adjusting to that (artificial) surface,” Archbishop Murphy coach Pat Jack said. “It was slick and wet and the ball popped funny. It was not like grass at all. Neither of us could control the ball in the first half.”

Gaitan also assisted on Rice’s goal and Alicia Bourke posted the shutout in goal for the Wildcats.
