Murphy stays alive

LANGLEY — The Archbishop Murphy volleyball team got off on the right foot, beating Sehome 3-1 in their opening match of the 2A District 1 volleyball tournament Wednesday.

The Wildcats downed the Mariners 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19 to advance to the semifinals later in the evening against Lynden, the No. 2 team of the Northwest League.

The Wildcats dropped the match to Lynden 3-0, losing 25-22, 25-23, 25-21. The win gives the Lions a spot in Saturday’s district championship match and an automatic berth to the state tournament.

“We gotta get a little better before we face them again,” Murphy coach Jim Hardy said. “I think they’ll go a long way in state. I’d like to stay around long enough to face them again.”

Murphy can qualify for state with a victory over Cascade Conference rival Cedarcrest on Saturday. The Wildcats beat the Red Wolves by scores of 3-0 and 3-1 this season.

Meadowdale 3, Lynnwood 0: At Mill Creek, the Mavericks stayed alive in the 3A District 1 tournament, defeating Royals 25-18, 25-16, 26-24. Meadowdale plays Squalicum, 3-2 winners over Ferndale, at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackson High School in the consolation round. The winner plays the loser of the Shorecrest-Mount Vernon matchup with the district’s second and final state tournament berth on the line.

Mt. Baker 3, Cedarcrest 0: At Blaine, Mt. Baker defeated Cedarcrest 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 in the opening round of the 2A District 1 playoffs.

Cedarcrest 3, Anacortes 1: At Blaine, the Red Wolves rallied in a loser-out consolation match against Anacortes to keep their hopes of a state berth alive with a 25-18, 25-22, 12-25, 25-21 win. Cedarcrest plays Archbishop Murphy on Saturday, with the winner advancing to state.
