Knicks waive Ewing Jr.

Right name, not enough game.

Patrick Ewing Jr. was waived Monday by the New York Knicks, who got down to the 15-player limit by cutting the son of their career scoring leader.

Ewing made a strong late bid to make the team, scoring seven points on 3-of-3 shooting Friday night in the fourth quarter of New York’s preseason finale. However, the Knicks opted to stick with shooting guard Anthony Roberson, who impressed them with his outside shooting and was signed over the summer.

Lakers waive Coby Karl

Coby Karl, who played in 17 games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season, was waived by the defending Western Conference champions. Karl, the son of Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, averaged 1.8 points, 0.8 rebounds and 4.2 minutes as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Lakers. He also played in 17 games with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League, averaging 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.1 steals.

The Lakers also announced they had picked up the fourth-year option on guard Jordan Farmar’s contract. Farmar, a first-round draft pick in June 2006 beginning his third NBA season, could have become a restricted free agent next summer had the fourth-year option not been picked up by this Friday.

Bobcats waive Davidson

The Bobcats have waived forward Jermareo Davidson, leaving Charlotte one shy of the regular-season limit of 15 players. Davidson was slow in learning coach Larry Brown’s system and appeared in only three of eight exhibition games. He fell behind journeyman Andre Brown in Larry Brown’s rotation.

Davidson was taken by Golden State in the second round in 2007, and was acquired in a draft-night trade that sent Jason Richardson to Charlotte. The Bobcats picked up the second-year option on Davidson’s deal before this year’s draft.

Nets C Boone back at work

New Jersey Nets center Josh Boone returned to practice on Monday after missing more than a week because of a rapid heartbeat. Boone met with coach Lawrence Frank after the workout and said he will be ready for Wednesday’s regular-season opener at Washington.

Boone started 53 games last season, averaging 8.2 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Raptors pick up Bargnani option

The Toronto Raptors exercised the fourth-year option Monday on forward Andrea Bargnani, the first overall pick in the 2006 draft. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Raptors had until Friday to exercise their option on the 23-year-old.

Wizards exercise 2 options

The Washington Wizards exercised their third-year options on forward Oleksiy Pecherov and guard Nick Young. Young was the No. 16 overall pick in the 2007 draft, and Pecherov was chosen 18th overall in 2006, but he played the 2006-07 season overseas before joining the Wizards.
