Injured forward Martell Webster and the Portland Trail Blazers agreed to a four-year contract extension Friday night. The Trail Blazers did not release the deal’s terms. The 22-year-old Webster averaged career highs of 10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 28.4 minutes in 75 games last season. He sustained a stress fracture in his foot during the preseason and is expected to be out until December.
Celtics exercise Rondo option
Boston exercised the fourth-year option on 22-year-old guard Rajon Rondo on Friday. He averaged 10.6 points and 5.1 assists last season, when the Celtics’ won their 17th NBA Championship. The former Kentucky Wildcat is entering his third season in the NBA. The 6-foot-1 guard was acquired by Boston in a draft-night trade from the Phoenix Suns.
Knicks’ make Marbury inactive
New York guard Stephon Marbury was placed on the inactive list before Friday night’s game against Philadelphia. Marbury, a former All-Star reportedly scheduled to earn $21.9 million this season, did not play in the Knicks’ 120-115 season-opening win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday.
Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni and Marbury met Friday and Marbury asked the coach if he was going to play. When told he would not be seeing action, Marbury reportedly requested he be put on the inactive list. In street clothes, he watched the game from the Knicks’ bench.
Pacers extend Granger
Indiana signed forward Danny Granger to a contract extension. Terms were not released. The 6-foot-9 Granger has averaged 13.7 points per game in his three seasons. Last year, he registered career-best averages in points (19.6), rebounds (6.1), steals (1.1) and 3-point field goal percentage (.404).
