VIKINGS: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson, the NFL’s leading rusher and the 2007 offensive rookie of the year, missed practice with a hamstring injury. Peterson said he is hopeful he can play against the Panthers, but he took a step back one day after participating in practice on a limited basis.
STEELERS: A billionaire suitor withdrew his offer to buy a majority stake of the Pittsburgh Steelers, saying the Rooney family needs more time to consider its options about the future ownership of the team.
Stanley Druckenmiller issued a statement saying he “removed himself from the process” and that it is clear that the Rooney family, which owns the Steelers, needs more time to consider its options.
The Rooney family approached Druckenmiller seven months ago about buying their shares of the team to help resolve estate planning and NFL ownership matters, Druckenmiller said.
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Farrior was fined $7,500 by the NFL for making an obscene gesture toward Cleveland Browns fans on Sunday night. Farrior made the gesture during the third quarter of the Steelers’ 10-6 win, saying afterward he was upset because fans were celebrating a minor injury to safety Ryan Clark. Farrior also drew a taunting penalty.
LIONS: At Boulder, Colo., Detroit linebacker Jordon Dizon has been sentenced to 24 hours of community service for driving while ability impaired. His lawyer, Peter Schaffer, pleaded guilty to the charge on Dizon’s behalf Thursday in Boulder. Dizon, a former Colorado star who didn’t attend the hearing, also must pay $895 in fines and court costs. Dizon originally faced charges of driving under the influence, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and failing to provide proof of insurance after his arrest April 20. A police report said his blood-alcohol level was 0.097, above the legal limit of 0.08.
BROWNS: Cleveland had a small setback when the Elias Sports Bureau took away a Browns sack and gave Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger a pass reception from Pittsburgh’s 10-6 win Sunday night. The sack was originally credited to the Browns’ Shaun Smith. The play was ruled a sack for a 7-yard loss. After reviewing the videotape, Elias changed the play to a successful pass for Roethlisberger because the ball came out of his hand, struck a teammate in the back and rebounded to the quarterback, who was tackled by Smith.
BRONCOS: Prosecutors in Georgia have filed two counts of simple battery against Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall stemming from a 6-month-old domestic violence complaint. Police allege Marshall threw his ex-girlfriend on a bed, slapped her and damaged an Atlanta apartment on March 4. Marshall was arrested March 6 on a domestic violence warrant requested by the former girlfriend. He was released the next day after posting $1,000 bond.
BEARS: Devin Hester’s status remained a mystery and so did the extent of his rib injury. After telling a few reporters he had torn cartilage, the Chicago Bears’ record-setting return specialist backtracked and said his ribs are simply bruised. Either way, he hopes to play against Tampa Bay on Sunday. He remains a game-time decision after missing his second straight practice Thursday, but he seemed relieved that tests earlier in the week did not reveal a more serious problem.
