The Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, where the majority of media-related events are happening this week, is under tight watch.
“SportsCenter” is broadcasting live, as is “NFL Network” and countless radio programs. That means that crowds are bound to gather and try to catch a peek at their favorite broadcasters in action.
To keep things orderly, the security folks have designated “standing areas,” which are marked off with blue tape on various parts of the floor.
The other day, I found out just how serious they are about their “standing areas.”
I had to conduct an interview over the phone, but I was getting terrible cell phone reception. So I journeyed on out to one of the standing areas for a better signal. Once the connection was perfected, I started talking and trying to scribble notes at the same time.
This was difficult while I was standing, so I sat down on the floor — because that’s how we roll.
Within seconds, security guards approached me to let me know I could not sit on the floor.
I guess when they say “standing area,” they mean it.
