After a four-year study, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has decided that Lake Sammamish kokanee do not meet the criteria of a distinct population segment, and therefore are not a listable entity under the Endangered Species Act.
A group of conservation organizations had petitioned the service in 2007 to protect the rapidly declining population, which had supported a popular sport fishery for years.
