The overager deadline came and went today with the Silvertips, as expected, remaining on the sidelines. Everett still has four overagers — forwards Dan Gendur and Brennan Sonne, defenseman Dane Crowley and goaltender David Reekie — one more than the limit. However, Reekie is on the 60-day injured list because of mononucleosis and is exempt from the overager limit until he’s well enough to come off the list.
There was some movement around the league as other teams scrambled either to rid themselves of excess overagers or fill vacant slots.
Early in the day Brandon solved its problem by trading defenseman Mark Louis to Red Deer for a third-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft.
Then two teams selected players in the overager cutdown draft, both having loose Everett ties.
Lethbridge selected former Silvertip left wing Michael Wuchterl, who was released by Vancouver earlier in the week, with the Hurricanes in turn releasing center Yashar Farmanara.
Then the Giants selected right wing Ken Petkau, which was an interesting move. Petkau, a former Chilliwack Bruin, announced his retirement from hockey last week, with the Bruins picking up former Everett right wing Brandon Campos off waivers as a replacement. But apparently Petkau is currently trying out with a pro team in the Central Hockey League. Hmmm.
Meanwhile, there was no news out of Saskatoon or Kelowna, the other two teams above the overager limit. Saskatoon still has five, Kelowna still has four. Hmmm.
On a different note, it appears that Everett right wing Matt Ius is fully recovered from the concussion he suffered last Saturday and should be in the lineup tonight against Kamloops. Center Zack Dailey, also recovering from a concussion, is not expected to play tonight but may be ready for Saturday versus Portland.
