SHORELINE — The King’s girls soccer team surrendered an opening-minute goal and saw its state title hopes dashed with a 1-0 loss to Overlake in a Class 1A semifinal Friday afternoon at Shoreline Stadium.
Overlake sophomore Jaquelin Nordhoff scored 46 seconds into the match off a cross from sophomore Alex Hobbs, and that was all the Owls (19-1-0) needed to advance to Saturday’s state title match against La Salle, a 1-0 winner over Cascade (Leavenworth) in the other semifinal. King’s (18-2-2) will play Cascade for third place at 10 a.m. Saturday.
King’s entered with 12 consecutive wins and seven straight shutouts, but Overlake ended both streaks in its semifinal victory. It was a rematch of the Nov. 5 bi-district title match, which King’s won 1-0 to hand Overlake its lone loss of the season.
King’s managed eight shots on goal and outshot Overlake 13-7, but the Knights were unable to score against an Owls defense that’s allowed just five goals all season. It was the first time this year that King’s has been shut out.
