Riley to start season opener for No. 12 Cal
BERKELEY, Calif. — Coach Jeff Tedford announced that Kevin Riley will be his starting quarterback when No. 12 California opens the season against Maryland on Sept. 5.
Tedford made the announcement after practice Monday. Riley had been competing with Beau Sweeney and Brock Mansion since the start of fall camp. Tedford says Riley’s experience, accuracy and consistency were the deciding factor.
Riley started nine games for the Golden Bears a year ago and has made 10 starts in his career at Cal. He has completed 53.4 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
OSU’s Wheaton held out of practice
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State freshman receiver Markus Wheaton could not practice Monday because of an unspecified NCAA clearinghouse issue.
The university says it’s a clerical matter, and the highly touted Wheaton’s eligibility should be resolved quickly. But until that happens, he will not be allowed to practice.
With starting receiver Darrell Catchings out with a wrist injury, the Beavers are counting on Wheaton.
Also Monday, the Beavers had a pair of former stars return to campus. Kicker Alexis Serna and running back Yvenson Bernard dropped by to visit coach Mike Riley and the rest of the Beavers. Serna and Bernard play for Winnipeg of the Canadian Football League. The Blue Bombers have a bye this week.
