Here’s some highlights from Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll’s radio appearance Friday morning on 710 ESPN:
– Carroll was excited about the Seahawks clinching the NFC West championship with their 24-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, Seattle’s third division title in the past four years. Carroll said it was a different road this season as the team has had to make it through “a lot of stuff.” But he acknowledged that the Seahawks were helped by the rest of the division being down this season, and he was glad the clinching came with two games remaining.
– Carroll was particularly effusive about the performance of the defense in Thursday’s game, which he said “played perfectly.” He said the idea was to wait out the Rams, and the defense did exactly what Seattle needed to wait things out and eventually get some going offensively. Carroll beamed about linebacker Bobby Wagner’s stop on fourth down, as well as cornerback Richard Sherman’s hit on Rams quarterback Jared Goff.
– Speaking of Sherman, he had another high-profile sideline incident as he got into a shouting match with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell during the fourth quarter. After the game Sherman revealed he was unhappy about the team calling pass plays on the goal line, alluding to the intercepted pass at the goal line in the final minute of Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots. Carroll said he and Sherman sat down for an hour Friday morning to discuss the incident, but he also praised Sherman for his passion. Carroll said it was too bad that it became a distraction, but that following Friday’s discussion he feels good about where Sherman’s at mentally.
– Another player who had a moment Thursday was defensive end Michael Bennett, who nullified a sack with an excessive celebration. Carroll said the team has had the discussion with the players multiple times about what is acceptable and what isn’t, and he laughingly directed people to this sketch by the comedy duo Key & Peele (word of warning, this clip may be PG-13):
– Carroll was happy about Seattle’s commitment to the running game, even though it produced just 72 yards on 30 carries. Carroll credited Los Angeles’ defensive front for the Seahawks’ struggles.
– Finally, Carroll said both Bennett and punter Jon Ryan should be OK. Bennett left the game late after a violent collision with Rams running back Todd Gurley, but should be fine after jarring his neck a bit. Ryan was knocked silly after getting hit at the end of a successful fake punt and was taken to the hospital for a concussion, but Carroll sounded optimistic that Ryan should be fine for Seattle’s Christmas Eve game against the Arizona Cardinals, with the extra couple days of recovery being valuable.
