Pete Carroll talking draft and this week’s minicamp

The Seahawks just wrapped up their first minicamp of the Pete Carroll era this afternoon, and things went well according to the team’s new head coach.

“We had some really good work,” Carroll said. “This was a very successful three days for us on so many different levels. Just connecting our football with our players in addition to the way that we practice, what happens philosophically in the meeting rooms, us gaining information about our guys, all of that stuff. So we really had a very successful three days.”

Carroll singled out quarterback play as one of the highlights of the past three days:

“What was maybe beyond expectations was the quarterbacks. The work that Matt has done and Charlie has done and Mike Teel to get ready for this so that we could function like this. They had so much under their command and they were really sharp for the first time out with new guys. The work that’s been done, the studying that’s been done with Jeremy [Bates] and Jedd Fisch, those guys have got a lot accomplished. It’s a good start.”

As for who will be protecting those quarterbacks, well that’s another story.

“Depth is an issue,” Carroll said of the offensive line. “For the most part, the first six guys really functioned pretty well. The meetings they had with Alex really paid off…Depth is really a concern right now, we’re really going to deal with that as we move forward every step of the way.”

And one big way the team can answer its depth concerns is through next week’s draft.

“It’s a huge opportunity for us,” Carroll said. “That was an exciting opportunity for us… It’s going to be a little bit like Christmas, we’ve got to wait and see what’s in those packages. We’re not sure yet until they come down at us, but we’ll bee absolutely ready for the scenarios and we really need to hit it. We need two guys to come in and help this football team win.”
