Fish Lake, located a mile northeast of Lake Wenatchee, is a popular year-around destination for trout and perch and, to a lesser degree, smallmouth and largemouth bass. The lake holds rainbow, brown and brook trout; large perch, which become a target of ice fishermen during the winter months, and smaller populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass. It’s a scenic area, and particularly appealing in the fall, when big browns go into spawning mode and become more aggressive and easier to catch.
Spring and fall offer the best action, and Nadine West, co-owner of The Cove Resort (509-763-3130), said fishing is good now for multi-pound triploids and standard rainbows going 13 to 16 inches. Trollers are pulling a High Lake Special with a worm (the lure is available at the resort) and bank and dock anglers are soaking Power Bait, or a worm under a bobber.
Brown trout are large and smart, but a little easier to find during the fall months. West said the largest brown weighed at the resort went 9½ pounds. The early mornings or evening hours are the best times to target the big fish. Oddly, trolled flies — shrimp patterns, green Careys, woolly worms — are good lures for the browns.
West said the first brown trout this fall came in last week, and that fishing for the trophy trout should improve through the end of this month and on into November.
