Pick of the Week: Free kids fish-in

The Jim Brauch Memorial Gissberg Ponds kids’ fishing day, sponsored by the Everett Steelhead and Salmon Club and Snohomish County Parks and Recreation, will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Twin Lakes County Park. It’s free and open to young people 14 and under, with no license required.

The event will take place on the north pond, juveniles only, and the pond has been stocked with 3,000 to 3,500 hatchery-raised rainbow trout up to 3-plus pounds in weight, purchased by the sponsoring fishing club. That’s in addition to regular plants by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The ponds lie adjacent to the west side of I-5 at Smokey Point, north of Marysville. Northbound on I-5, take Exit 206, go west over the freeway then turn left at the shopping mall stoplight. Go through the mall and south a short distance on the road paralleling the freeway. Parking’s a little tight, but there’s plenty of room for kids and dogs to run, and toilets available.

Bank fishing works fine, or even better, carry a small boat or inflatable over the berm to the pond and troll a small spoon near the surface. Most bank fishermen use Power Eggs in pink, orange or chartreuse, or anything garlic scented. A mini-marshmallow and piece of worm will also work. Use a simple slip sinker rig and two to three feet of light leader, and if you don’t know how to set that up, any tackle shop will be glad to help.
