LEXINGTON, Ky. — While Kentucky waits on a decision from John Calipari, former Wildcats men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino says Calipari would do just fine if he takes the job.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino said Tuesday the Memphis coach would do a “great job” resurrecting Kentucky’s program. Pitino pointed to Calipari’s track record with the Tigers and at Massachusetts as proof he knows how to turn a program into a winner.
Calipari is considering an 8-year, $35 million deal, ESPN reported. It would make him the highest paid college basketball coach.
Calipari and Pitino coached against each other in the 1996 Final Four, with Pitino’s Kentucky team knocking off Calipari’s UMass team in the semifinals.
