SEATTLE — On the same day that University of Washington men’s basketball player Quincy Pondexter made history by earning his fifth Pac-10 player-of-the-week award, the senior from Fresno was passed over for a bigger prize.
The Pac-10 announced Monday that Cal’s Jerome Randle won the player of the year, an award for which Pondexter and Stanford’s Landry Fields were also leading candidates.
Pondexter was one of two Huskies named to the 10-member, all-Pac-10 first team, along with sophomore Isaiah Thomas. Juniors Venoy Overton and Justin Holiday were named to the conference’s all-defensive team.
Pondexter ranked second in scoring (20.2 points per game) and third in rebounds (7.8 per game) in the conference, right behind Fields in both categories. And on Monday, he earned his fifth player-of-the-week award _ the most ever by a Pac-10 player.
The Huskies (21-9 overall, 11-7 in the Pac-10) finished third in the conference standings, two games behind Randle’s Bears. UW will play Oregon State in a Pac-10 tournament game Thursday.
