LAKE STEVENS – Junior posts Brittany Tri and Karri Gallagher combined to score 28 points underneath the basket as the Lake Stevens girls basketball team shook off the rust of being idle until Friday to claim its first victory of the season.
The Vikings, the last team in the state to play its opening game, captured a 66-55 Wesco North victory over Stanwood at Lake Stevens High School.
The Vikings host former Meadowdale and current Ballard coach Karen Blair at 7:30 p.m. today at the Lake Stevens High School gym. Blair in 11 seasons at Meadowdale had 10 state tournament appearances and two state championships. Ballard finished 12-11 last season in Blair’s first year with the team.
“They really didn’t have an answer for Brittney and Karri,” Vikings coach Randall Evens said. “It helped to have Mary (Ochiltree) hitting from the outside as well.”
Ochiltree ended the night with a team-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers for the Vikings.
Stanwood’s Rachele Kloke, a 5-foot-11 senior guard, paced Stanwood with 27 points.
