MT. VERNON — Lynnwood, the fourth-place Wesco 3A team in the regular season, now finds itself in the 3A District 1 championship game against Meadowdale, after defeating Glacier Peak 46-39 in a semifinal Saturday at Mt. Vernon H.S.

Lynnwood was propelled by senior Aaron Matzen, who led all scorers with 19 points, and Simi Fajemisin, who chipped in 17. Both players elevated their games in the final quarter to help get the victory, Matzen scoring six, and Fajemisin eight to make up 14 of the 18 Lynnwood fourth-quarter points.

Lynnwood trailed 31-28 at the start of the final quarter, but behind Matzen and Fajemisin, and an elevated defensive effort it was able to outscore Glacier Peak 18-8 in the final quarter.

“All five guys came up big on the boards,” he said. “It was a great defensive effort and team effort for us to get that win,” Lynnwood coach Darrell McNeal said.

The district championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon H.S. The winner takes the No. 1 seed into the 3A state tournament. The loser plays a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 8 p.m. Saturday for the second seed to state.

Meadowdale got the best of Lynnwood twice in the regular season.

“I like our chances, people counted us out against Mount Vernon, and they counted us out against Glacier Peak,” McNeal said. “We look forward to playing them again and playing them tough.”
