SNOHOMISH — The Lynnwood boys basketball team dropped another close game in the 3A District 1 tournament Monday night and saw its season end with a one-point loss.
The Royals (11-14 overall), who lost an overtime contest to Mount Vernon in the first round, squandered an 11-point first-half lead in a 47-46 loss to Ferndale at Glacier Peak High School.
Ferndale’s Jeff Frost scored 13 points, including seven in the third quarter, and Taylor Carr added a team-high 16 points as the Golden Eagles (8-15) rallied to cut Lynnwood’s lead to 32-31 after three quarters.
“We (Lynnwood) didn’t get the scoring that we needed, we didn’t move the ball very well, we were kind of stagnant,” Lynnwood head coach Darrell McNeal said.
Simi Fajemisin, the Royals’ 6-foot-10 University of San Diego recruit, was called for his third foul in the third quarter and McNeal benched the senior center fearing he would pick up a fourth foul.
“The momentum just shifted,” McNeal said of benching Fajemisin, who finished with eight points. “Ferndale was playing hard. They play hard, they play until the end and they did a nice job of rallying back and staying in the game.”
Lynnwood, which received a game-high 22 points from junior Anthony Edwards, had a chance to take the lead with 11 seconds left, but a missed shot clinched the comeback win for Ferndale, the Northwest League’s second seed.
Ferndale advances to play Shorecrest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a loser-out contest at Glacier Peak H.S.
“It was a good game, a hard way to end the season,” McNeal said.
