SHORELINE — The crowd was noisy, the weather was sloppy and the play was competitive between rivals Shorecrest and Shorewood throughout 90 minutes of regulation, two overtimes and a shootout in Wednesday’s Wesco 3A boys soccer game.
Both Shorecrest (6-0 league, 7-0 overall) and Shorewood (5-1, 5-2) were undefeated entering the game.
Shorewood struck first in the 23rd minute on a Hamza Hadadi goal that he tapped in on a rebound after a free kick bounced off of the hands of Shorecrest keeper Sam Schober and then off the crossbar.
Shorecrest tied the score 1-1 in the 48th minute on Glenn Paden’s goal off a Jayme Parry assist. Parry crossed the ball from the left side of the field into the middle as the ball bounced off of Shorewood’s Simon Aspinal, off the crossbar and Paden just happened to be at the right place in the right time for the tap in, much like Hadidi’s previous goal. It was the 13th goal of the year for Shorecrest’s senior center forward.
“He’s having a great year so far. He’s our big goal scorer and a big offensive threat,” said Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson.
In the shootout, Shorecrest and Shorewood both scored on their first four kicks. On the fifth attempt, Shorewood missed, allowing Shorecrest’s Ian Adams, a Junior co-captain, to hit a low shot past the keeper for the 2-1 victory.
Said Thompson after the game, “It was not a typical night for us tonight, but I’m proud of the boys. To hang in there on a wet and sloppy night and find a way to win, that’s what it’s all about.”
