Prep football: Lakewood 37, Cedarcrest 12

DUVALL — Lakewood beat Cedarcrest to move into a tie for first place with Archbishop Murphy atop the Cascade Conference with one game remaining in regular season play. Cougars QB Justin Peterson was 4-for-8 for 54 yards and a touchdown and had 7 carries for 53 yards and a rushing TD. Cedarcrest responded to an early Lakewood TD, but couldn’t get back on the board until the fourth quarter when they were already down 31-6.

Defense was key for the Cougars which kept Cedarcrest’s star running back Martin Vacamoce from scoring and held him to 38 yards.

“The defense really came out for us,” said Lakewood head coach Dan Teeter. “(It) was absolutely nails out there. (They) shut down the run really well against Vacamoce … kept him out of the end zone. It was a big accomplishment.”

“On offense the offensive line was opening big holes for the run all night. We passed a little but we were confident running the football due to the guys up front,” continued Teeter.

“They’ve been in a funk for a couple of weeks and really got their mojo back tonight, I’m proud of the kids.”

In addition to Peterson, Donovan Evans had 11 carries for 68 yards and a TD as well as two catches for 26 yards, and Brandon Stott had three carries for 41 yards and a TD and a catch for 11 yards.
