Cascade Symphony Orchestra opens its 2009-2010 season Nov. 2 with a program highlighting Gustov Holst’s dramatic masterpiece, “The Planets,” at the Edmonds Center for the Arts. The new season marks the 48th year for the symphony.
This concert will mark the first CSO performance of Holst’s epic suite in its entirety. The Symphony will be joined by the women of the Edmonds Community College Symphonic Choir in the ethereal final movement.
CSO’s new principal clarinet player, Kevin Fay, will make his debut with the orchestra in the well-known clarinet opening of “Rhapsody in Blue.” Kimberly Russ will be featured as piano soloist.
Russ, pianist for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, is also the rehearsal pianist for both the Seattle Choral Company and the Seattle Symphony Chorale, Seattle’s premiere orchestral choirs. She maintains a select private teaching studio at her Shoreline home where she resides with her husband, Christopher Olka, (principal tuba, Seattle Symphony) son James, and their cat, Berlioz.
Also included will be the Rakoczy March from Berlioz’s “The Damnation of Faust.”
CSO has collaborated with artists Emanuel and Lenore Vardi to bring a musical and visual experience to audience members. Both artists are world-class musicians, and their music-inspired paintings are recognized nationally. The concert program will feature their work, and two of their paintings (“The Planets” and “Rhapsody in Blue”) will be displayed in the lobby. Additional artwork will be displayed in the ECA Mezzanine Gallery.
The season will continue Nov. 23 with the Cascade Chamber Orchestra concert, then resume Jan. 25, 2010 with “The New World.” “A Russian Evening” is slated for March 29, and “Brahms First” on May 25. In addition, the orchestra will present a Children’s Concert Feb. 20, 2010, and small ensemble performances on April 11 and April 16, 2010.
