Prep Football Roundup: Darrington wins opener

SEATTLE — The Darrington football team traveled south Saturday night and opened its season with a strong defensive performance in an 18-6 non-league win over host Seattle Lutheran.

Senior defensive tackle Moe Hyde set the tone for the Loggers (1-0) with four sacks.

“The defense played outstanding,” Darrington head coach Chad Monteith said.

As is usual with the first game of a new season, Monteith said the team has to work out the kinks during practice.

“We’ve got some bugs we need to work out,” Monteith said. “…There really wasn’t any big, big plays — everyone just played good.”

Quarterback Johnny Loughnan put Darrington on the board with his arm and legs. Loughnan tossed a 7-yard screen pass for the game’s first score and scrambled in from 8 yards out to put the Loggers up 12-0 at halftime.

Darrington’s biggest offensive player, according to Monteith, was senior running back Colton Palmer.

Palmer ran through the Seattle Lutheran defense for 99 rushing yards and a touchdown.

“(Palmer) had a great game,” Monteith said. “He pounds the football. He’s one of our better players.

“It was exciting to get that first win.”
