SUMNER — The Vikings traveled to Sumner for one of the top matchups of Week 1 high school football in Washington, and the Spartans (1-0 overall) knocked off two-time defending champion Lake Stevens in overtime. Vikings kicker Lucas Mooring sent the game into overtime with a 25-yard field goal at the end of the fourth quarter. Sumner intercepted Lake Stevens (0-1) in overtime and then kicked a game-winning field goal. Individual statistics were not available at press time.

Monroe 31, Bishop Blanchet 17

SEATTLE — Aaron Clifton provided all the touchdowns for the Bearcats (1-0 overall), scoring twice on the ground and two more times through the air to lead Monroe over the Bears (0-1).

Shorewood 17, Redmond, 7

REDMOND — Tyler Giles’ 19 carries for 139 yards and a touchdown led Shorewood. Niko Zacharias added 72 yards on 11 rushes and scored the Stormrays’ other TD as Shorewood outgained the Mustangs 353 yards to 153 on the ground. Giles’ 47-yard TD put Shorewood (1-0 overall) up 10-0 in the first quarter. Redmond (0-1) scored in the fourth quarter to avoid a shutout. Gatsby Palmer (15 carries, 83 yards) and Paddy Andresen (eight carries, 42 yards) also contributed to the Stormrays’ rushing attack.

Interlake 27, Sultan 18

SULTAN — The Turks (1-0 overall) outplayed Interlake (0-1) in the last 2 1/2 quarters, but couldn’t quite overcome an early 14-0 deficit. Sultan receiver Julio Vargas accounted for 177 of quarterback Kaden Koehler’s 181 passing yards, and the pair connected touchdowns of 83 and 18 yards. Benjamin Dilger paced the Turks with 96 yards and a TD on 15 rushing attempts, but Sultan couldn’t overcome Interlake quarterback Julian Hayes’ 214 passing yards and three touchdowns. Sedro-Woolley 42, Mariner 0

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The Cubs intercepted Mariner three times and returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown to start the season with a victory. Mariner fell to 0-1. Sedro-Woolley quarterback Cliff Tadema completed seven of eight passes for 100 yards and two TDs.

Archbishop Murphy 48, Lakewood 24

ARLINGTON — Running back Marcus Gaffney tallied four touchdowns, totaling 104 yards, in the Wildcats’ win over the Cougars in the season opener for both teams. Running back Jevin Madison and wide receiver Henry Gabalis also registered one touchdown apiece for Archbishop Murphy (1-0 overall).

Running back Daniel Amevo and wide receiver Bakary Sanko put Lakewood (0-1) on the board. Their scores developed from flea-flicker and swinging-gate schemes.

EVERETT — The Timberwolves’ offense and defense showed up to play in Jackson’s win over territorial rivals Everett.

Running back Tre Austin ran for 104 yards and scored two touchdowns, Tyler Lykken 75 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Colby Bossert threw for 103 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Cole Truant and defensive back Seamus Williams each registered one touchdown.
