PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Glacier Peak wins in double overtime

PURDY — Faced with one big-gamble play to win it, Peninsula coach Ross Filkins didn’t hesitate to put it in his players’ hands.

With an apperance in the Class 3A state playoffs on the line, Filkins opted to go for the two-point conversion and the win instead of kicking the extra point in double overtime on Saturday night.

But halfback Darrian Creamer was stopped about 2 yards short of the end zone and Glacier Peak held on for a thrilling 49-48 double overtime win in a Class 3A preliminary-round playoff game at Roy Anderson Field.

“It’s the way we play,” a somber Filkins said. “You got one play to win it, I trust our kids. I’d do it again.”

The play capped off a crazy game that saw both teams score on their lone possessions in both overtimes of the Kansas City tiebreaker.

After Creamer’s 1-yard run put the Seahawks in position to tie with an extra point, instead he got the ball again to try and convert for two points.

“It was pretty tough when you get that close and you can’t finish,” said the senior, who rushed for 256 yards and five touchdowns.

The Seahawks led 35-13 with 3 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Creamer.

But the offense ran out of gas, which left the door open for Glacier Peak (8-2) gunslinger Zach Richter, who led the Grizzlies back, eventually tying the game on a 16-yard touchdown pass and ensuing PAT with 4:22 to go.

Richter threw another touchdown pass in the first overtime and the Grizzlies got a touchdown run by Alex Stepanchenko that was the difference.

Richter carved up the Peninsula secondary to the tune of 441 yards, completing passes to six different receivers.

Lakes 55, Everett 0: At Lakewood, Strap on your thinking caps defensive coordinators, second-ranked Lakes has added a wrinkle to its high-octane offense. Lakes unveiled its version of the Wildcat offense with fullback Jordan Rivera operating the trendy scheme to near perfection in the Lancers’ throttling of Everett in a 3A Quad-district playoff game Saturday night at Harry E. Lang Stadium. Rivera ripped off a 29-yard run on his first snap in the Wildcat. Lakes employed it a few times in the first half, before using it exclusively on a drive in the third quarter. On that possession, Rivera, who played quarterback as a freshman, showed poise as a passer, completing two throws to receiver John Goldwire for gains of 19 and 10 yards. Rivera capped the drive with a bullish run around the left end for a 15-yard touchdown that gave Lakes a 49-0 lead.

Bethel 42, Lake Stevens 7: At Bethel, The Braves took advantage of early miscues for a 26-0 lead in the first quarter of the 4A Quad-district playoff game. Bethel senior running back Anthony Meray rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries and had two touchdowns to lead the Braves on the ground. Despite the stormy weather, quarterback Justin Hordyk had no problem taking to the air, where he completed 13 of 25 passes for 195 yards and three scores. The loss ended Lake Stevens’ season.
