Prep girls basketball: Archbishop Murphy 44, Sehome 32

MT. VERNON — Archbishop Murphy put together a consistent team effort to beat Sehome 44-32 in a District 1 2A girls basketball loser-out playoff game Thursday night at Mount Vernon High School.

Murphy kept a lead throughout the entire game, outscoring their opponent in every period.

“We kept it there (the lead) with smart basketball and good defense, making sure we didn’t turn it over,” said Archbishop Murphy head coach John Barhanovich. “We held them to 23 percent shooting for the game and held them to only two field goals in the second half.”

Sehome shot just 10 percent from the field in the second half.

Beth Carlson led Murphy in scoring with 14 points, shooting 7 of 12 from the field.

Murphy senior guard Jenni Farrell came off the bench in the second quarter and gave the team a spark, playing great defense, Barhanovich said.

Rachel Albert scored 10 points in the first half for Sehome and finished with a team-high 12 points.

Archbishop Murphy will play Anacortes in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon High School for a spot in the 2A State Regional. Barhanovich said he is expecting stout defense and solid guard play from Anacortes.

“They are a very, very aggressive team,” Barhanovich said. “They have a quick guard who creates turnovers. They’ll press us and we will need to handle the basketball.”
