PREP GOLF: Highland Christian’s Crawford wins 2nd state title

BELLINGHAM — Craig Crawford of Highland Christian won his second Class 2B/1B state championship in three years Wednesday, firing a 2-under-par 70 at Bellingham’s Lake Padden Golf Course for a two-round total of even-par 144 and an 11-shot victory.

“This one was a little more exciting,” Crawford said. “I was looser because I’d been there before. I tried to use my experience and play a lot smarter. I used a lot of irons off the tee instead of driver and tried to keep it in play.”

John Graham of Northwest Christian had been second to Crawford by three shots after the first round but shot a 79 Wednesday to drop to third place.

“I had a three-shot lead compared to one (in 2006),” Crawford said. “I just tried to make pars and the birdies came.”

Jon Enge, Crawford’s teammate at the Arlington private school, was fifth, bettering his first-round score by 10 strokes to finish at 160. Alex Witt of Highland Christian was 21st at 176.

Their finishes gave Highland Christian fourth place in the team standings. Northwest Christian had five players make Tuesday’s cut and two placed third and fourth Wednesday to help give the Lacey school the team title.
