Dori Monson has been hired to coach the Shorecrest High School girls basketball team, Shoreline School District athletic director Don Dalziel announced on Friday.
Monson takes over for Ed Wissing, who guided Shorecrest to its first district championship and first state tournament appearance this past season. Wissing resigned in early June to focus on finding a full-time teaching position, Dalziel said.
Monson — who hosts a weekday radio program, The Dori Monson Show, on 97.3 KIRO FM — was Wissing’s top assistant coach the past two seasons. Before that Monson coached the Rattlesnakes AAU program, working with many athletes who now play on Shorecrest’s varsity squad.
Next season Shorecrest is expected to return all but one player from its groundbreaking 2009-2010 team that advanced to the Class 3A state championships and had a record of 16-7. The Scots, who began playing in 1976, earned their first district title and first state berth.
“We are excited to have someone with Dori’s experience and commitment of high expectations to continue to build the Shorecrest program,” Dalziel said in a prepared statement. “Dori is well connected in our community and has been an instrumental piece in the recent success that Shorecrest has had. We look forward to watching Dori continue to build a respected program in (Wesco), District 1 and at the State level.”
Softball benefit game
Former Western Conference fastpitch stars like Cory Mattson (Everett High Class of 2008) and Kori Seidlitz (Mountlake Terrace High Class of 2009) are expected to play in the inaugural Wesco Alumni Softball Game scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Lincoln Field in Everett.
Former Wesco North standouts will play a squad of former Wesco South standouts. Mike Moran (Jackson) and Kim Stewart (Mountlake Terrace) will coach the South team. Kyle Peacocke (Everett) and KT Allyn (Marysville-Pilchuck) will coach the North team.
Tickets for the game are $10 via pre-sale and $12 at the gate. Proceeds from ticket sales and concessions will be donated to the Ashley K. Aven Foundation, named after a former Meadowdale High softball player who suffers from acute myeloid leukemia, a terminal form of cancer. Aven would have been a senior at Meadowdale this year but she left school because of her illness. For information about buying presale tickets call 206-718-1077.
Trio off to Montana Western
Glacier Peak teammates Dustin Verdin and Jahu Coleman will both play for the University of Montana Western (Dillon, Mont.) football team, according to Montana Western assistant coach Wes Warren. Former Archbishop Murphy player Stan Smith will also play for Montana Western, Warren said.
