PREP NOTEBOOK: Two schools earn Scholastic Cups

Archbishop Murphy and King’s High Schools won the 2009-2010 WIAA Scholastic Cup awards in Class 2A and Class 1A, respectively. Both schools are members of the 2A/1A Cascade Conference.

The Scholastic Cup, according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association website, “recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance. Sportsmanship is also a factor, with substantial points deducted for ejections from contests.” Schools with the most points in each classification at the end of the school year win the Scholastic Cup.

The other 2009-10 Scholastic Cup winners are Mead (4A), Mercer Island (3A), Bear Creek (2B) and Mount Rainier Lutheran (1B). The WIAA will present the 2A Scholastic Cup trophy to Archbishop Murphy at 9:40 a.m. Friday during a school assembly in the gymnasium.
