3A District 1 Tournament
Semifinals (winner to state, non-elimination)
Mount Vernon 1, Mountlake Terrace 0 (OT)
SHORELINE — The Mountlake Terrace High School boys soccer team’s Cinderella story didn’t come to an end Tuesday evening, but it did hit a speed bump.
Mount Vernon’s Aaron Diaz scored the golden goal a minute into the second overtime, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over the Hawks in the semifinals of the Class 3A District 1 tournament at Shoreline Stadium.
Mountlake Terrace, the No. 10 seed, unexpectedly played its way into the semifinals, and the Hawks were minutes away from reaching a second straight penalty shootout — Mountlake Terrace upset second-seeded Shorecrest on PKs three days earlier.
But Diaz picked up the ball at the left side of the penalty box, dribbled along the top edge, then hit a right-footed shot across the grain that just snuck inside the near post to send the Bulldogs (14-0-3) to Saturday’s championship game, as well as earn Mount Vernon a spot at state.
Mountlake Terrace (8-9-2) will face No. 5 Monroe in a winner-to-state game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.

Shorewood 2, Edmonds-Woodway 1
SHORELINE — As even as the Shorewood Stormrays and Edmonds-Woodway Warriors have been when they’ve played this season, and as well as both teams played in those games, it was perhaps inevitable that it would require a bit of fortune to separate the two.
Ilya Mohav’s freak goal with two minutes remaining in regulation proved the difference, and the Stormrays booked their spot at state by beating the Warriors 2-1 Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A District 1 boys soccer tournament at Shoreline Stadium.
Mohav’s defensive clearance from inside his own half was misjudged by Edmonds-Woodway goalkeeper Gabriel Wilhelm, as the ball bounced in front of him and over his head to give Shorewood the lead.
Consolation (loser out)
Shorecrest 3, Meadowdale 1
SHORELINE — Ryder Baldwin, Prince Sampson and Wyatt Kimball scored goals as the second-seeded Scots stayed alive with the victory over the sixth-seeded Mavericks at Shoreline Stadium.
Meadowdale valiantly attempted to play the ball out from the back all game long. However, all three Shorecrest goals came as a result of Maverick errors while trying to play out. The Scots led 2-0 at halftime, and after Meadowdale’s Devin Gibson finished off a lightning-quick attack midway through the second half to cut the deficit to one, Kimball scored the clincher with 10 minutes remaining.
Shorecrest (15-2-1) advanced to face the loser between Edmonds-Woodway and Shorewood in a winner-to-state game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.
Meadowdale finished its season 7-8-4.
