Prep Softball Roundup: South Whidbey beats Archbishop Murphy

LANGLEY— South Whidbey pitcher Katie Piehler was the definition of staying cool under pressure and teammate Allison Wood provided a full serving of bases-clearing action Monday night.

With South Whidbey trailing Archbishop Murphy by three runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, Wood hit a three-run triple, capping a six-run inning and sending the Falcons to a 6-3 Cascade Conference win.

With the win, South Whidbey improved to 3-1 in league and 4-3 overall. Murphy lost its first league game, dropping to 3-1, 4-2.

“I was saying ‘oh gosh, we are down 3-0 going into the sixth’…then we got that inning going and had that nice clutch hit that put us on top,” South Whidbey head coach Don Wood said.

Piehler faced eight batters in the first inning, giving up two runs in an inning marred with South Whidbey errors. But Piehler settled down, and put together 1-2-3 out innings for her third win of the season. She finished the game with striking out three and walking only one.

“We had runners on base, but we just couldn’t get that clutch hit,” Don Wood said. “We got that big inning, and then hung on in the end for the win.”

South Whidbey center fielder Chantal White made a sprinting catch, robbing a gap-shot by Murphy’s Amber Manuel to seal the game.
