Prep volleyball: Glacier Peak 3, Everett 1

EVERETT — Glacier Peak’s Ruby Mensing had 19 kills and setter McKenzie Wilkinson had 26 assists as the Grizzlies knocked off the Everett Seagulls 3-1 in a nonleague match between former Wesco 3A league rivals.

“Glacier Peak was very competitive,” said Everett head coach Kris Jones. “No doubt we’ll be seeing them in districts.”

Rebecca Kopp tallied 10 kills and Tenika Wentworth 21 assists to lead Seagulls.

Everett took the first set 25-20 and then started to tinker with different combinations in the next two sets.

In the fourth set, the Seagulls led most of the way before the Grizzlies tied the score at 22. Glacier Peak then took the final three points to close out the game.

Although coming up short against the eighth-ranked team in the state, Jones was pleased with the result in her first game as the Everett coach as she learns what exactly the Seagulls can do.

“It was nice to them working on things we (had practiced). We’ve beeing working a lot on ball control,” said Jones. “Also seeing what people can do (in different positions), I didn’t have any preconceived ideas coming in.”

In addition to Kopp and Wentworth, one player who stood out to Jones was Chase Osburn.

With 2011 Wesco Second Team libero Jody Barhanovich having graduated, Jones has to find a replacement. Osburn, a junior, “played confident” directing the Seagulls’ backline in her first varisty action.
