I attempted to get a hold of Tyler Maxwell, Everett’s all-time leading goal scorer who was sent home two weeks ago and traded to Edmonton on Thursday, to get his reaction to the deal. However, Maxwell had a long day of travel today to get to Edmonton in time for a game tonight against Medicine Hat, so I’m not surprised I haven’t heard back from him yet. The Red Deer Advocate got in touch with Maxwell yesterday and ran a story with some quotes.
I got a chance to chat with Tips general manager Doug Soetaert about the deal a little while ago. He seemed satisfied with the return in the trade (a third-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft, plus prospect defenseman Griffin Foulk), particularly considering he said there was a limited amount of interest in Maxwell. Soetaert described the 16-year-old Foulk as an offensive defenseman who skates well, and that Foulk was taken later in the bantam draft (eighth round) than he should have solely because he’s U.S. born. Soetaert said he felt good about Everett’s chances of recruiting Foulk to play in the WHL.
If the Tips are indeed able to land Foulk, and if Foulk turns out to be the player described, that’s a nice little pick-up for the Tips. Everett has a lot of defensemen in the 94-96 classes, but almost all of them are stay-at-home types, so a quality puck mover would be a nice complement.
