BOXING: The California State Athletic Commission changed its original decision on the James Toney-Hasim Rahman fight from a technical knockout to a no decision.
Toney stopped Rahman in the third round of their July 16 rematch of former heavyweight champions in Temecula, Calif., after Rahman told the ringside doctor that he couldn’t continue because of a cut over his left eye.
The original decision was a technical knockout win for Toney. Rahman later appealed, and after a review, the commission said Monday it was changing the technical knockout to a no decision, according to Bill Douglas of the state athletic commission.
GOLF: Golfer Chris Wood turned professional on Monday, just over a week after finishing as the highest placed amateur at the British Open.
The 20-year-old Wood tied for fifth with Jim Furyk at Royal Birkdale, seven shots behind winner Padraig Harrington. Wood signed with the International Sports Management group and will receive invitations to European Tour events.
Wood, who had his father Richard carrying his bag at the British Open, has already been invited to play at the British Masters at The Belfry.
NHL: Boston has signed restricted free agent forwards Martin St. Pierre and Nate Thompson.
The Bruins acquired St. Pierre’s rights from the Chicago Blackhawks in a trade for Pascal Pelletier last week. The 24-year-old St. Pierre played in five NHL games last season and spent time with the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate in Rockford, Ill.
The 23-year-old Thompson played in four NHL games for the Bruins. He has been with the team’s AHL affiliate in Providence since 2003. The Alaska native played in 216 AHL games, including 10 playoff contests.
TENNIS: Twelfth-seeded Tommy Robredo beat nemesis Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-2 in the opening match of the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio. Robredo is 3-3 against Fish, including a loss in their previous meeting at the Australian Open in January.
No. 16 seed Ivo Karlovic beat Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-4, but the other two seeded players in action Monday were eliminated. Tommy Haas beat No. 14 Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4, and Tomas Berdych knocked off No. 13 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
… Tamira Paszek of Austria beat 14th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (1), 1-6, 6-1 in a match interrupted four times by rain at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Montreal.
The match was tied 1-1 in the third set when the fourth and longest delay halted play for 90 minutes. When they resumed, the 17-year-old Paszek quickly put away a match that lasted nearly seven hours.
… Second-seeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary beat Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 7-5, 7-6 (2) in the first round of the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm, Sweden.
Camille Pin of France upset No. 7 Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-4, 7-6 (3).
