This doesn’t actually pertain to the Silvertips. This involves my other beat covering the Everett AquaSox minor-league baseball team. I was shocked to learn this morning that former AquaSox outfielder Greg Halman was found stabbed to death in his native Holland. I was talking with AquaSox trainer Spyder Webb earlier today and we both agreed that working in the sports world puts us in something of a bubble that shelters us from the real world. When the real world penetrates that bubble in ways like this, it throws one for a loop.
Halman spent two summers playing for the Sox in 2006 and 2007. I’ll remember him as the most-talented player I’ve seen put on an Everett uniform since I began covering the team in 2004. He had all the physical tools, the question was whether he was going to figure out how to put it all together. It seemed the past couple seasons he was starting to do that, and he’d just reached the majors with the Seattle Mariners this season, which makes the timing of this all the more tragic.
My thoughts go out to Halman’s family and those in the Everett area who came to know him.
