Reardan beats Darrington girls 64-24 in semis

SPOKANE — Darrington came out flat in its 2B girls basketball state semifinal matchup against Reardan Friday at the Spokane Arena.

The Loggers’ first three possessions led to the first three turnovers of what would be a first-half total of 23 in a 64-24 loss to Reardan.

It was their s

econd slow start in two days. In Friday’s game against White Swan, Darrington needed a big comeback and two overtimes to win 68-66.

In Saturday’s matchup, passing miscues, a plethora of traveling violations and other mistakes allowed Reardon to score 13 points off of turnovers in the first half.

Darrington committed 11 turnovers in the opening quarter. The Loggers kept within striking distance thanks to five points by Renee Cousins in the first quarter and poor free-throw shooting by Reardon. But when Reardon opened up the second quarter with a 10-0 run, the game quickly got out of reach for a struggling Darrington team.

Darrington’s senior post, Hailey Wales, picked up her third foul less than a minute into the second quarter and sat out until the second half. She finished with two points and four rebounds. Renee Cousins led Darrington in scoring with seven points. Randi Wales added four points and five rebounds before fouling out.

Reardan’s hot start was sparked by eight first-quarter points from sophomore post Kelsey Moos. Moos finished with a game-high 15 points, hitting on two of her three 3-pointers.

Reardan guard Tori Wynecoop, who scored two 3-pointers in the first half and finished the game with eight points, kept looking for her shot and eventually opened up scoring opportunities for her teammates. Two of those teammates were Chantel Heath and Liz Flowers, who each added nine points for the Indians.

Reardan also shot the ball well, hitting 50 percent from the field, 43 percent from 3-point range.

Darrington faces Lake Roosevelt at 1 p.m. today in the game for third and fifth places.
