NEW YORK — Rod Thorn says he will retire as NBA President of Basketball Operations in August.
The 73-year-old Thorn is in his second stint at the league office. He said the plan was always to stay two years during the transition from David Stern to Adam Silver as commissioner.
Among his duties was to serve as the league’s main disciplinarian. He says his job likely will be filled by senior vice president Kiki Vandeweghe.
As a team executive, Thorn drafted Michael Jordan in Chicago and built the Nets into two-time Eastern Conference champions. He said Monday he has no plans to work for a team again, at least not on a full-time basis.
Thorn previously spent 14 seasons as the NBA as president before taking the Nets job.
Thorn’s plans were reported earlier Monday by Yahoo Sports.
Thorn played nine seasons in the NBA. He was an original member of the Seattle SuperSonics their expansion season of 1967-68.
