An entertaining day at the Comcast Arena today with good action in both games, particularly the second. The general feeling around camp is that this has been Everett’s best rookie training camp yet. Apparently being more selective with invitations and limiting it to 15- and 16-year-olds has done the trick. Anyway, here’s some game recaps:
Blue vs. White
Team Blue, inspired by Kellan Tochkin, scored the game’s final seven goals to win 7-3. Tochkin scored twice and had a couple pretty feeds to set up others. Alex Tindall, Brody Eisbrenner, Carter Page, Kevin Wiens and Paul Grenier also scored for Blue. Tyler Parker, Cameron Abney and Byron Froese scored for Team White.
It was during the second half of this game that Tochkin finally started to dominate the way one would expect from a first-round pick. He constantly got into good positions and found teammates with great passes. Blue’s Markus McCrae didn’t have the same impact he had Thursday — he seemed to have troubles with his footing. Kent Simpson didn’t allow a goal during his half, though he wasn’t tested that hard. He’s only given up one goal so far this camp. Blue also got good help from its secondary forwards like Eisbrenner, Page and Brandon McLean. For Team White, Parker and Froese continued to look good. Derek Johnston also looked lively.
White vs. Red
Froese has been good throughout camp. But the 16-year-old took it up another notch in this game by scoring four goals, including one with seconds remaining that earned a 5-5 tie. Three of Froese’s goals came on good moves to the five-hole. Froese is leading the camp in both goals (7) and points (8). He received good support Tyler Parker and Cameron Abney as the trio logged a lot of ice time together and showed good chemistry. Ryan Doner scored White’s other goal.
Justin Waskewitch continued his good play for Red with a pair of goals. Brody Moen, Colin Hoffman and Carter Shinkaruk also scored for Red. Waskewitch, Everett’s fourth-rounder this year, has really showed off his stickhandling and shiftiness these first two days.
Overall this game had it all: up and down action, bodies flying around hitting everything, and even the camp’s first fight as Abney and Hoffman dropped the gloves right off the second-half faceoff. Give Abney, who towered over Hoffman, the win in a brief tussle.
