The news on James Carpenter, who injured his knee in practice Wednesday, was about as bad as it could be. Carpenter, Seattle’s first-round pick in April, has a torn ACL and will be out for the season.
That’s the second season-ending injury on Seattle’s line this week following the loss of rookie right guard John Moffitt to a knee injury in Sunday’s game. Seattle likely will use Breno Giacomini at right tackle, though they may also make a move to add depth at the position.
The loss of both Carpenter and Moffitt is a big blow not just in the short term, but also for the future of a rebuilding team. By using their first two picks in April on linemen, the Seahawks showed their commitment to rebuilding a line that has been a struggling unit for years. Those two will not just miss out on valuable experience the rest of this season, but, in Carpenter’s case in particular, could now end up missing offseason workouts and perhaps even the start of training camp.
Check back for reaction this afternoon after practice.
