SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The South Whidbey softball team graduated seven seniors from last year’s squad that rolled to its second-straight undefeated league season.
So far the Falcons haven’t skipped a beat.
Junior starting pitcher Christie Robinson struck out 11 hitters and senior Bronwyn Russell drove in the game’s only run with a single to left-centerfield in the top of the seventh inning to help South Whidbey edge Sedro-Woolley 1-0 Monday in a non-conference thriller.
Robinson (2-0) was perfect through five innings and surrendered just two hits in a complete-game victory, hurling Class 2A South Whidbey (2-0 overall) past Class 3A Sedro.
“I didn’t really know where we were going to stand with (Sedro-Woolley),” Todd Lubach said. “I was really amazed how well Christie Robinson did.
“She did a pretty dominating job against them.”
The Falcons backed up Robinson with error-free defense.
Carrie Anderson was 2-for-3 and scored the winning run for the Falcons.
Russell, South Whidbey’s No. 3 hitter, supplied the hit of the game. Lubach wasn’t surprised.
“She’s definitely one of the top players on the team,” he said. “She’s a senior, a leader. She’s one of the top guns.”
Attempting to match last year’s success is a tall order, but with Robinson on the mound Lubach likes South Whidbey’s chances.
“As long as Christie Robinson stays healthy, we’ll do fine. I don’t expect to go unbeaten, but I definitely think we’ll be at (the district tournament) and hopefully state.”
