STANWOOD – The Western Conference North Division boys tennis tournament kicked off Wednesday at Stanwood High School, where a round of single-elimination matches was played on the first day of the two-day tournament.

“The kids were real competitive and showed really great sportsmanship,” said tournament director Ron Shanander. “It was a real quality showing by the kids.”

Most matches went as expected, but there were a few surprises.

Snohomish’s Zach Gordon, who was seeded fifth, was upset by Cascade’s Chad Schroeder, 6-3, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Jon Beutler of Stanwood fell in three sets to Tyler Stocker of Snohomish 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles, the eighth-seeded team of Shane Gibbons and Brian Rindal from Mount Vernon was upset by Oak Harbor’s Micah Pruss and D.J. Dalire, 6-2, 6-1.

“(Pruss and Dalire) haven’t played together before this and each match they are playing better,” said Oak Harbor coach Horace Mells Jr.
