Seahawks decide on a backup QB, and it’s not Colin Kaepernick

According to a report on the NFL Network, Austin Davis will return to backup Russell Wilson

The undeniably transitioning Seattle Seahawks appear to be staying the same at at least one position: quarterback.

Again, they are signing Austin Davis — and not Colin Kaepernick — to back up Russell Wilson. That is according to a report Monday by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Davis served as Wilson’s backup last season. Davis appeared in three games but did not throw a pass.

Davis, 28, and Stephen Morris, the backup QB the Seahawks signed Friday, have both played for Seattle’s new offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. Davis played three seasons in St. Louis (2012-14) when Schottenheimer was the Rams’ play-caller. Morris, 25, had Schottenheimer as his quarterbacks coach in 2016 with the Indianapolis Colts.

The deal to bring back Davis would be for a base salary of $790,000 for 2018.

Last month the Seahawks released their third-string quarterback from 2017, Trevone Boykin, after his latest legal troubles in Texas.

Last week, the Seahawks canceled a tryout for Kaepernick. The former Super Bowl starter has been unsigned for two years since kneeling during the national anthem before games throughout the 2016 season.

Source: McDowell to be cut

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Seahawks seem likely to release 2017 second-round draft pick Malik McDowell in the near future.

McDowell, a former Michigan State standout, never played or practiced for the Seahawks after suffering a mysterious injury in an ATV accident last summer.

Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll has declined to go into any specifics about the accident, but McDowell is believed to have suffered a serious head injury.

Seahawks add 4 players

RENTON — The Seahawks signed free agent linebacker Paul Dawson, while exclusive rights free agents center Joey Hunt, defensive end Branden Jackson and long snapper Tyler Ott signed their tenders. Seattle made the moves at the beginning of its offseason workout program Monday.
